Video Tutorials on Studio - Font Engine in Studio

Click on the Details button to view a description of each tutorial. All tutorials work well with current versions of Embird even though they were created in an earlier version. If major changes have been made to Embird, you will find information in the Details window as to what has changed and how it affects the material covered in that tutorial. All videos may be viewed online or downloaded for your viewing pleasure.

Tutorials Studio 1-5 build on each other to give a firm foundation for digitizing with Studio. It is recommended that they be viewed in order.

Studio 1 - Introduction

Recorded from live class, September 3, 2014.

Studio is the digitizing part of Embird. We use it to create embroidery designs. It can also be used as an advanced "editing" tool for those changes that cannot be made to designs in Editor. There is so much to say about Studio, that it cannot be presented properly in one or two lessons, so this is just the first in a long series.

The goal for this first class is to give you a quick overview of Studio. I present the steps necessary for creating a simple embroidery design - setting up the hoop area, importing an image, using 3 basic digitizing tools to create the design, and then getting it ready to send to your machine. I show you what I mean when I say you can "edit" a stitch file using Studio.  Included with the class are a few files you can use to practice what is covered during class. Beginner level, approximately 1.25 hours.

You may use the trial version of Studio for class, but you won't be able to save your work. You may find it helpful if you have a little experience in Editor, such as navigating folders and opening files. You might want to check out my tutorial Editor 101.

Upon purchase, you will be given a link to download the class packet through both a download page and an email. This is not the link to the video, but to a zipped file with instructions and files for use with the class. This link expires in 7 days, so download it quick. Open the ReadMeFirst pdf file in the zipped file. It will have the link to the video and the password that is needed. The links to the video do NOT expire. As with all my products, email me if you need an extension on the download time.

Studio 3 - The Fill Tool

Recorded from live class, November 18, 2014.

Don't think of this as a Christmas tree - think of it as a tool to further your digitizing education. It is cute with or without the ornaments. But don't skip adding them or you'll miss some important practice steps. The lesson includes how to manually create a fill object along with discussions on stitch direction, pull compensation and density as they apply to fills. You'll also learn how to create objects using the Shape menu (preset shapes). Beginner digitizing. Video lasts just over 1.5 hours.

Recommendations. You should be familiar with creating outline objects, using the parameters window and how to edit nodes. You may find it helpful if you have a little experience navigating folders and opening files in Editor as well. My tutorial Editor 101 can help with that. You may use the trial version of Studio for class, but you won't be able to save your work.

Studio 4 - Column Tool Part 1

Recorded from live class held in January, 2015.

You can create even width satin stitch using the Outline tool but you have little control over the results. The Column tool gives you full control of stitch direction and other aspects as well as giving you the ability to create uneven satin width shapes. There is a lot to learn about this marvelous tool, so are 2 lessons on it. Part 1 shows you how, when and why to use the 3 column modes, the suggested parameters, and auto-corner basics. Beginner digitizing. Video is split into 3 sessions, approximately 1.5 hours total.

Studio 5 - Column Tool Part 2

Recorded from live class held in April, 2015.

In this class you will learn how to handle digitizing some of problematic areas you may encounter when using columns. It covers several types of corners manually, how to “split” column objects, goes into a little more depth on about pathing designs using an alphabet letter as an example. We also take a peek at a mysterious setting at the bottom of the Parameters window - Strips - which can give you the ability to create the popular "ripple-look". Thank you Lorna Bouchard and Elise Williams for a wonderful treat! Tutorial is split into 4 sessions, over 2.5 hours total.

Applique Peggy's Way

Applique Peggy's Way

Applique Peggy's Way

Recorded from live class in October, 2015.

I love to create appliqué designs in Studio. Studio has several built-in appliqué tools but I found they just do not suit the way I work. I like to have full control over all parts of my designs, so over the past 11 years I've developed my own methods. Appliqué is not just placing fabric and stitching around it. I'll walk you through the basic technique step by step and then share my solutions to problems that most likely will arise at some point. These tips will be helpful not only with appliqué but with regular embroidery as well. Tutorial is split into 3 sessions, approximately 2.2 hours total.

Recommendations You need to know how to open and merge files in Studio. You also need a working knowledge of the basic objects - Fills, Columns, and Outlines including how to change their parameters (properties like density, underlay and pull compensation). If using a trial version of Studio, you will not be able to save your work.

Font Engine in Studio 1

From a live class held September 1, 2015

Working with Font Engine in Editor hasn't changed much since its beginning. But Font Engine in Studio was reworked in 2010. All the tools are still there - mostly - but it can be hard to find them. The goal of this class is to help you transition from working with Font Engine in Editor to Font Engine in Studio. Along with basic text creation you will learn how easy it is to create vertical and multi-line text, set text on the included baselines (circle/swirl, slant, etc) - everything you can do with Font Engine in Editor. You will also learn how easy it is to edit the resulting text to stitch the way YOU want it to stitch, something you cannot do in Editor. Intermediate level. Tutorial is split into 3 sessions, approximately 1.6 hours total.

Recommendations You need to know how to open and merge files in Studio. You also need a working knowledge of the basic objects - Fills, Columns, and Outlines including how to change their parameters (properties like density, underlay and pull compensation). This class requires at minimum Embird 2010 build 8.8D. You can work with a trial version of Font Engine but will be restricted to the use of the characters ABC and abc. If using a trial version of Studio, you will not be able to save your work.

Font Engine in Studio 2

Font Engine letters can be used as a starting point for some really fun designs. I hope you enjoy this 2 video set.

Shadow Applique. Shadow (or Echo) applique is fun and relatively easy. In this lesson I walk you step by step through making this cute project for the 130x180 (5x7") hoop. The lettering is created using Font Engine but the rest is done in the Studio window. Techniques covered include expanding objects, shaping fills, creating outlines around fills, enlarging the finished design and alternative cover stitches. You can apply the techniques and principles learned in this lesson to make these and other designs including echo quilting. Video is approximately 42 minutes.

Angel1 Athletic A

Split Athletic Letter. Learn how to split an applique letter in Studio. The basic letter is created in Font Engine and tthen edited in the main Studio window. It fits the 130x180mm (5x7") hoop but can easily be resized for your specific needs. Techniques learned include creating applique lines from a Column object, combining Outline pieces, splitting using Guidelines and maximizing stitch order. The video is approximately 37 minutes.

Recommendations You need to know how to open and merge files in Studio. You also need a working knowledge of the basic objects - Fills, Columns, and Outlines including how to change their parameters (properties like density, underlay and pull compensation). This class requires at minimum Embird 2010 build 8.8D. You may find the Studio lesson Applique Peggy's Way to be beneficial. You can work with a trial version of Font Engine but will be restricted to the use of the characters ABC and abc. If using a trial version of Studio, you will not be able to save your work.

Upon purchase, you will be given a link to download the class packet through both a download page and an email. This is not the link to the video, but to a zipped file with instructions and files for use with the class. This link expires in 7 days, so download it quick. Have you ever saved a new design file and come up with an empty hoop when you opened it later? It most likely happened because the original file was written with a much older version of Embird. Newer versions of Studio have a bit of a compatibility problem with them. Here is a simple fix. Added October 2015. Click here to go to the free video. No password needed.
